Docs & help
Guides for installing, using and running Linx. They're the same guides as the Help built into Linx, so what you read here matches what you see on your own server.
Start here
Installing
Installing Linx
For the system adminYou start the install on the server with one command. Everything after that happens in your browser. It takes about ten minutes, plus any time your DNS…
The setup wizard
For adminsAfter the first sign-in, the setup wizard walks you through the first choices. Each step has a recommended answer, and you can change everything later.
Front doors: how people reach Linx
For the system adminPeople reach Linx from the internet on port 443, the usual port for secure web pages. What sits in front of your server decides how that port gets to Linx.…
Moving Linx to a new server
For the system adminMoving Linx is a backup on the old server and a restore during the install on the new one.
Server settings and running setup again
For the system adminServer settings change how the server itself is set up: the domain, what's in front of it, the DNS company's key, the size and the extras. Only a system…
The repair page
For the system adminWhen Linx's own address stops working (the domain lapsed, the certificate is gone, the front door changed), you can't reach Server settings through it. The…
Everyday use
Signing in
Open your Linx's address, like https://pbx.example.com, and sign in.
Call history
Call history in the sidebar lists your calls, newest first, by day: the ones you made, the ones you got, and the ones you missed. A number on it counts the…
Calls in the browser
Linx is a phone in your browser. Keep the page open to get calls.
Locked out
After five wrong passwords, Linx makes each next try wait: one minute, then longer, up to an hour. During the wait, even the right password is refused. This…
Lost your authenticator or passkey
Sign in with your password, then choose Use a recovery code instead and type one of the codes you saved. Each works once.
Microphone, speaker and ringtone
Settings (in the sidebar) chooses which Microphone and Speaker the browser uses for calls, and the Ringtone volume. These apply to this browser only.
My account
Open it from the menu under your name: My account.
Passkeys and authenticator apps
A second step keeps your account safe even if someone learns your password. Admins must have one. Everyone else is encouraged to.
Team and presence
Team lists everyone with a Linx account: their name, extension and status. Press Call to ring someone.
Using Help
Help in the sidebar has the guides for your Linx. You see the ones for what you can do: admins see the admin guides too.
Voicemail
When nobody answers, callers can leave a message. Voicemail in the sidebar shows yours, newest first, with a number on it for the ones you haven't heard yet.
Your invite or set-password link
Your admin gives you a link (or a QR code) to set up your Linx account. It works once, for 24 hours.
Your iPhone and iPad
The Linx app turns your iPhone or iPad into your extension: it rings for your number, and calls you make from it show your number, not the phone's.
For admins
Admin home and Simple mode
For adminsAdmin home is the first page of the Admin area. It shows:
A phone system or gateway
For adminsYour own phone system (like a Grandstream UCM) or a gateway for landlines can sign in to Linx, the same way a desk phone does. Linx then sends calls out…
Admins only from my home or office network
For adminsYou can let admins manage Linx only from your home or office network. Outside it, an admin gets the ordinary view: the Admin area is replaced by one greyed…
Company sign-in (Google, Microsoft and others)
For adminsPeople can sign in with their company account instead of a password: Google, Microsoft 365, Authentik, Keycloak, or anything that speaks OpenID Connect.
Desk phones and phone apps
For adminsA desk phone, or a phone app on a mobile or computer, signs in to Linx with its own username and password.
Linx can send email: invites, "Forgot your password?" links, voicemail and alerts. It sends through a mail account you already have, like Gmail, Microsoft…
Extensions
For adminsAn extension is a number that rings a phone: for a person, or a shared one like a reception desk.
Incoming calls
For adminsIncoming calls shows each of Your numbers, with one sentence saying what a caller gets: who rings, what happens if nobody answers, and what happens outside…
Office hours and holidays
For adminsOffice hours say when your company is open. A phone number can ring people during them and do something else outside them, like play "We're closed"…
People and invite links
For adminsPeople are who sign in to Linx: to make calls, or to help run it.
Phone lines
For adminsA phone line connects Linx to the outside phone network: a phone company over the internet, or your own phone system with landlines.
Private connections (WireGuard)
For adminsSome phone companies connect to you over a private WireGuard connection instead of the internet. Only calls to that company go through it.
Ring groups
For adminsA ring group rings several people for one call: all at once (whoever's free answers first), or one after another in the order you choose. Use one for Sales,…
Undo and routing changes
For adminsEvery change to where calls go is kept: numbers and lines, ring groups, office hours and holidays, When someone calls, and outgoing calls (the order lines…
Webhooks and API keys
For adminsFor your own software. Both are expert pages: turn Simple mode off to see them (Admin home and Simple mode).
What phones can call
For adminsOutgoing calls decides what every extension may call, and which phone line outside calls use.
Written answers in Help
For adminsHelp's search finds the parts of the guides that match a question. You can also let Help write an answer: a short reply in plain words, made only from those…
Running Linx
A phone line is down
For adminsWhen a line goes down, Linx sends an alert and Phone lines shows it. Calls then use the next line, if you have one (What phones can call).
A phone won't register
For admins"Register" means the phone signs in to Linx. When it can't, check in this order.
Activity
For adminsSystem → Activity shows what happened in Linx, as sentences: who signed in, who changed what, and when. Open one to see its Details. Passwords and keys are…
Alerts
For adminsLinx tells you when something needs you: a phone line down, a failed backup, someone guessing passwords or asking for many password resets, an admin with no…
Backups
For adminsA backup holds everything Linx knows: people, extensions, phone lines, settings, and the keys to read them. Keep backups, and keep a copy away from the server.
Can't open Linx's address
- Is the address right, starting with https://? - Does another website open? If not, it's your internet connection. - Does it open on your phone on mobile…
linx doctor
For the system adminlinx doctor checks the whole server from the inside: services, certificates, DNS, the firewall, phone lines, backups and more. Run it on the server:
No audio on a call
Call 43. If you hear yourself, your microphone and speaker work, and the problem is on the other side of the call.
Restoring from a backup
For the system adminA restore replaces everything in Linx with what the backup holds.
System status and Restart
For adminsSystem → Status shows whether each part of Linx works: Linx services, the Certificate, whether it's Reachable from outside, Phone lines and anything that…
